  1. The ScreenMode w3 interface is available via anonymous ftp from 
  2. wilbur.njit.edu in dist/w3.  The Sun and Dec versions are a bit out
  3. of date, so plan to get a new one soon,  only the HP version is up
  4. to date.  This is still a prerelease version.

  6. We have an experimental server for our CWIS plus a special gateway
  7. server.  The ScreenMode interface can still be access via telnet to
  8. eies2.njit.edu with the login www.  You can try the manual page reader
  9. their, or via http://eies2:1234/man.  We make extensive use of the <PRE>
  10. tag for preformatted text.  Much of our hypertext, including the manual
  11. pages, will not be formatted properly unless you use one of our readers,
  12. or another reader modifies to support <PRE>.

  14. The preformatted tag, PRE, unlike <PLAINTEXT>, allows anchors etc. to be 
  15. inserted in text that is already formatted.  It greatly simplifies the
  16. task of importing text from independant applications will anchors
  17. everywhere you want them.  In addition, we have a set of macros for
  18. MS-word which allow editing HTML in WYSIWYG fashion, but this also
  19. requires support of the preformatted tag in HTML.

  21. Al Leurck (al@eies2.njit.edu) developed the PRE tag and MS-word macros
  22. here in the ScreenMode interface and we are adding it to the tkWWW X
  23. interface.

  25. We plan to impliment group hypertext using a mail server to suppliment
  26. the HPPT access protocol.  Readers can contribute anchors to a text via
  27. mail to www at the server machine.  Our browsers will support this
  28. transparently.  Later we hope to participate in a broader effort to
  29. include SGML tags to support forms, for truely interactive hypertext.
